Can this be done? Yes. We’re all searching for new ways to cut heating and cooling costs and stretch energy dollars. Even cold air contains some heat, and heat pumps can extract heat from the outside air on a cold day and bring it indoors to warm a home in winter. In moderate temperatures, heat pumps can return the most “heat per units” of energy consumed. This increased efficiency, as high as 300%, translates into lower utility bills. In temperate regions, installing a heat pump can reduce gas and electricity bills as much as 35-45% when compared to conventional heating systems.

Heat Pump Logic – Is it right for you?

  1. Heat pumps are the most economical when they can be used year round for heating and cooling.
  2. The efficiency of a heat pump varies greatly with the outdoor temperature. When the outdoor temperature drops below 30 degrees, the heat pump must be supplemented with a electric or gas heating system.
  3. A heat pump can cost a bit more to install than a conventional heating and cooling system.
  4. If you are heating with natural gas, oil or propane, it may make sense, when you are thinking of adding or replacing you air conditioner, to consider using an add on heat pump instead.
  5. Today natural gas is often more costly than the electricity you’d need for a heat pump to produce the same heat. The right way to decide the most appropriate form of heating and cooling for your home is to do an economic analysis, based on a system’s purchase cost and efficiency, plus the cost of your fuel and your home’s comfort requirements.
