Do You Actually Need to Replace the Whole System?
Probably not — and we’re not going to try to sell you something you don’t need. If your furnace is running fine and your AC goes out, we replace the AC and retrofit it to your existing equipment. About 80% of our cooling season calls are exactly that.
Here’s something most people don’t know: even in the summer, it’s your furnace fan moving the air through your house. So if you want even temperatures on every floor, the indoor and outdoor equipment both need multi-stage capability. A high-end outdoor unit on a basic furnace still gives you a basic system.
Standard Forced Air
An outdoor unit connects to your existing ductwork and furnace fan to cool the house. Because there are two pieces of equipment — indoor and outdoor — plus copper, refrigerant, and more materials involved, AC installs run a bit higher than a furnace-only job. That’s just the nature of the system.
Ductless Mini Splits
If your home has a boiler, a finished attic, an addition, or one room that’s always miserable in July, a mini split is usually the smarter move. We mount a unit on the wall, run refrigerant piping and electrical to an outdoor unit, and that room is taken care of — without touching your existing system at all.
We’re doing more of these every year. It’s a lot easier than running ductwork through a finished house, and they’re extremely efficient.

Usually no. If the furnace is running well, we retrofit the new AC to it and move on. The exception is if you want a premium multi-stage system — then both the indoor and outdoor units need to match for you to actually get the comfort benefits. We’ll tell you where you stand when we come out.
A standard system uses your existing ductwork. A mini split doesn’t need ductwork at all — it’s a wall-mounted unit connected to an outdoor unit via refrigerant piping and electrical. Mini splits are the right call for boiler homes, finished attics, additions, or any room your current system can’t keep up with.
Two pieces of equipment instead of one, more copper, more refrigerant. The refrigerant piece is also tied to EPA regulations — the tighter the restrictions, the higher the cost tends to run.
Around $200 a year depending on what you’re replacing. If your system is from the 90s, some of today’s equipment is over twice as efficient. Mini splits tend to be the most efficient option we install.
A system that’s sized wrong or installed wrong is going to run constantly and still not keep you comfortable. We do load calculations, match the equipment correctly, and test everything before we leave. That’s the difference between a system that works and one that just runs.
